Simple

Just returned from the Spring Sale at Clayworks. These past few days I've been thinking about the surface design of my pottery. I mailed out several pieces to my friends, Charlie and Sharon this morning and picking pieces for them gave me a chance to see what pieces I have.
The last few that came out of the gas kiln were quite busy glaze-wise. I'm thinking about making a batch of pottery that is very simple on the surface. Part of me really wants to create and develop my own look of pottery; this will take time. I keep telling myself, this will take time. So, time, creativity, and learning will tell what develops. Yes, simple is so good. Gotta think about all this more. That's all for now.

Amy,

Developing a cohesive body of work is a great goal. While I was working on my BFA, I would make 20-30 of the same piece, cups, bowls, whatever. That way I wouldn't be so invested in a single piece and fret over how to glaze it. It makes experimenting with surfaces easier and thus being able to choose those that work and resonate for you.

You're right about it taking time, not just as you make pots, but as you sit with the ones you have and study them. I still get a little carried away with glaze sometimes. My pieces are all similar in construction, but my glazing can take them all over the place sometimes. Just keep making pots. It's the only thing to do.

Finding one's own style...a tricky thing. I don't think that it's something you can actively try to do, it just kind of happens. Or at least I hope it will at some point!
